PROTECTING THE CHILDREN

The following are some factors that will assist your children in a healthy adjustment to the new family situation:

  • A good quality parent-child relationship with a psychologically healthy parent is the greatest protective factor for children.

  • A secure attachment to both parents is important.

  • Insulating children from conflict is extremely important.

  • Consistent, quality contact with both parents, designed in a mannere that meets the children's developmental needs.

  • Supports for children outside the home helps everyone. This includes grandparents, adult mentors, and community supports.

  • Personal attributes help cope-social skills, temperment, competency and good self-esteem.

There are a number of steps you need to be aware of during the transition to two single-parent households.  It starts with how to tell the children you are getting divorce and continues with the need to understand their perspective, the impact of separation and divorce on them,  creating and understanding parenting plans, and managing as a co-parent.

Children of all ages are typically left out of the process, subjected to enormous life changes about which they receive little or no information and over which they are permitted to exert little or no influence.  It does not have to be this way.
